It is common for people to gain excess body fat as they get older no matter how much they watch what they eat. The reason for this is they are losing the main component that drives their metabolism – which is their body’s engine and the rate they burn fuel (calories). Unless they are actively working to keep that muscle with proper exercise they are losing it so even if they continue to eat the same amount of food as always their weight will slowly but surely creep upwards.
Our muscular system is made up of tissue that is highly metabolically active. This means that the more toned muscle tissue you have, the faster your metabolism is while both at rest and when you are active. It is easy to understand this when you discover that without enough muscle strengthening and maintaining activity we lose around one half pound of muscle tissue each year with the rate doubling after age 50.
