Bill to raise dropout age advances
The Courier-Journal, Frankfort, KY – March 23, 2010
A bill to raise Kentucky’s school dropout age from 16 to 18 passed a Senate committee on Tuesday. The vote on House Bill 301, which now goes to the full Senate, was 10-2. Republican Sens. David Givens of Greensburg and Vernie McGaha of Russell Springs voted no.  The committee amended the bill to raise the dropout age to 17 in 2015 and 18 in 2016, instead of 2013 and 2014, respectively, as specified in the original measure.

Anti-smoking Campaign All Over the World

Stop smoking campaigns are taking different forms in different parts of the world. In the United States, there has been a heavy emphasis on the use of commercials, billboards and programs aimed at young children and adults. Many of these programs are funded by big tobacco companies as the result of a lawsuit lost by tobacco them. There have also been movements to make smoking illegal in bars, restaurants, malls and other indoor facilities. This is because of the well documented effects of second hand smoke on non-smokers.

Plainfield group works to restore park and teach dropouts vital skills
Star-Ledger, Plainfield, NJ – December 9, 2009
One Plainfield organization is trying to intervene with at-risk high school dropouts before they turn to gangs or drugs and teach them life skills with the hopes they will return to the classroom or enter the work force. This week, the Plainfield chapter of the New Jersey Youth Corps received a $ 25,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection trails grant to continue the service learning component of its program, an ongoing effort to beautify the city’s Green Brook Park.
